Though I agree with the argument, I don't also, its really an arbitrary standard. Can you use prior films in the same series to explain something? Absolutely. Can later films reveal something that makes the prior film click? Again When done right most, even most who dislike "extra material" will defend it. What about a spinoff in the same media type, what if it was simultaneously released with a media of a different format that was intended to be taken together? Really its not as strong of an argument as some say. The only absolute id say is death of the author, authors commentary that isn't actually media of any form doesn't count outright.
